JMU TRIP DAY TWO

After a very early breakfast we travelled to a nearby school to practice. As we started unloading it began to rain.  After ten minutes back on the bus we got off and had a very successful practice.  Just as we ended rehearsal and returned to the bus a deluge of rain completely soaked everyone.   We had a box lunch on the way back to the hotel, where we went for an unplanned quick dry/change. The kids did a phenomenal job of getting dry, changing clothes and getting back on the bus in full uniform in under 20 minutes! Go Bucs!

Then we headed by bus to James Madison University.   Upon our arrival, the sun finally came out! A beautiful sunny day for competition, nothing like the 28 degree temperatures we experienced last week, in fact it was just a short time before we were all hot!  The kids had a great performance for a very enthusiastic crowd!  Drum major Amber Scruton did a super job of pushing the tempos and keeping the energy up throughout the whole show! After performing, and a 100+ bottles of water, (thanks Mrs. Bonney for hiking back to the bus for those Smile!) the kids went back to the stadium to watch the gigantic JMU band.  Gigantic is an understatement ....when they came on the field they completely framed the field in band members!
Next came retreat.  Our hometown Buccaneers won awards for Best General Effect Visual and then the suspense started to build.. After hearing 5th place, 4th, 3rd etc.  The kids and parents got more and more excited.   Our show is called JOY ... and you can only imagine the thrill and joy these hard working kids got hearing that their band came in first place this afternoon in class AA.   Hoots and hollers, lost voices, tears from happy seniors, and incredulous looks from newbies led to an hour of celebration back at the equipment trucks and bus area.  The walk from the field to bus was about a half mile and the kids celebrated the entire way.  It's late so I'm not putting a lot of captions on the pictures... but I think you'll be able to tell that it was a great day for your kids and the Oswego band program.   Look at their faces when they were performing, the intensity and concentration, the determination, grace, etc are all things they committed to in July, and after months of hard work and practice, it paid off for them. Even though the rookies may have been a little overwhelmed playing to
such a big crowd, I am sure they couldn't help but feel a little excited to hear "Give me an O" ring out from the stands when they came onto the field!!!!!!  Seniors I hope you enjoyed all that you have worked so hard for.  Good luck in the Dome next week.
Amusement park tomorrow! Time to relax and have fun ! Stay tuned for more pics another day!

Bucs arrive in Virginia | Print |  E-mail

The day started very early  with all of us gathering in the OHS theater by 6 am to get on our way to Virginia.
Our bus fleet arrived slightly late and headed for Syracuse. Why Syracuse?  Bus three had some safety issues that needed to be resolved.  The kids on bus three were treated to an extra special ride on a great big yellow bus, just like our triangle!  Bill Myer, and Don Blum from the transportation department came along for the ride to make sure our replacement bus would be in tip top shape. Kudos to them both for insisting that our students get the safest and best treatment possible!  They were so good at checking out buses that the flexible and special kids on bus three moved all their pillows, backpacks, goodies, etc.  THREE times.. ! By the time we actually got rolling and fueled up in Syracuse it was about 10:30 and we were happy to get on our way.   After a long bus ride and a quick stop for lunch we arrived at our hotel at about 7 pm.  Since it was raining, we skipped practice, gave the kids time to change and check in, and headed for dinner at the Golden Corral.  By 10:30 pm all rooms were taped in and hopefully the kids are sleeping for our performance tomorrow,
(6 am wake up call)  Send your best "Buccaneer Born Ready" thoughts our way tomorrow between 3 and 3:30 and if you can do any kind of "rain rain go away" dance  try that too!  Stay tuned for another update tomorrow!
